Biden: 'I don’t think we need a wider war in the Middle East' | EL PAÍS USA EDITION
Dear readers,
Joe Biden said this week that he knows how Washington will respond to the deaths of three U.S. military personnel in a drone attack on a base in Jordan, but the president faces a problem that previous U.S. administrations have had to navigate during conflicts in the Middle East: how to respond forcefully enough to prevent more attacks, but not to the point of triggering an escalation of unpredictable consequences. The White House needs to calibrate its response very carefully at a time when the spotlight is already on its 30,000 military personnel in the region, amid a conflict that has extended beyond the war between Israel and Hamas and threatens to drag other powers into the arena.
Meanwhile, amid the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza, EL PAÍS spoke to health workers struggling to meet the needs of the population in the Strip. The death toll among Palestinians now stands at over 26,000 people, and the WHO reports only seven of the 24 hospitals in northern Gaza remain open, working with insufficient staff, equipment, and fuel, while of the 12 medical centers in the south, only seven are still partially functioning. “We don’t have a sense of being alive. We are just machines trying to make the days go by one by one,” says a doctor with Médecins Sans Frontières.
We also spoke to NASA astronaut Frank Rubio, who made headlines around the world last September when he finally returned to Earth after a record-setting 371 days on the International Space Station, where he was stranded due to a breakdown in the cooling system of the Russian Soyuz MS-23 spacecraft due to bring him home. “When I was there, every day, I missed my family and I missed the house. But now that I’m here — four months after returning — at least once a week, I think that I would like to be there again for at least a few hours, to enjoy the view, to enjoy floating.” We hope you enjoy this selection of stories. Thanks for reading.
