| Our favorites this week Get going with some of our most popular good news stories of the week | A lasting legacy Sixty years ago, Atlanta native and engineer Ronald Yancey became the first Black graduate from the Georgia Institute of Technology. This spring, he beamed with pride as he handed his granddaughter her master's diploma in electrical and computer engineering form the same school. Deanna Yancey is one of several members of Yancey's family to graduate from Georgia Tech since his groundbreaking achievement. In fact, Yancey's legacy is so meaningful, that there is a statue of him on the renowned engineering school's campus. Deanna Yancy says her grandfather was over the moon when she was accepted to the school's master's program. "It's a different world to be known for something especially as powerful as a movement as he was able to start," she said in a video played during the ceremony. It would feel illegal if a baguette-related record holder wasn't French.) The 461-foot-long loaf was baked in a special mobile oven and prepared during the Suresnes Baguette Show at the Terrasse du Fécheray observation deck near Paris. After the official nod from Guinness — and some celebration — part of the baguette was cut up, spread with Nutella and shared with the public. Another part was given to the local youth association Celije so that it could be distributed to the homeless that evening. It's Peggy, who won the unique title of Britain's ugliest dog in 2023. The pooch is believed to be a Pug and Chinese Crested mix — which is sometimes called a "Pugese" — and hails from Leven, near Hornsea, in East Yorkshire. She's playing Dogpool, which is, yes, a real character. She even has her very own "Dogpool" Instagram page, and the adoration of "Deadpool" actor Ryan Reynolds himself. "It's love at first sight," he told Empire Magazine about his character's bond with the dog. Read the whole story here. | |

| When it comes to climate news, we'll take any win we can get. According to new data from climate think tank Ember, a record-breaking 30% of the world's electricity was produced by renewables last year. That's a huge step on the way to reaching a worldwide climate target of 60% renewable electricity by 2030. Numbers rose thanks to a big boom in wind and solar energy, and climate experts are optimistic that innovations will continue to boost that sector in the coming years. That also means less and less reliance on fossil fuels. In fact, more than half of countries are already five years past their peak in fossil fuel-generated electricity. | I think there's something really powerful about being surrounded by a group of people that are all trying deliberately to not walk the path most trodden.
- Former Team USA track cyclist Chris Burch, who made one of the most epic career pivots in history when she swapped her cycling helmet for an astronaut's suit. After stepping away from her cycling career, Birch was selected from more than 12,000 applicants to join NASA's astronaut class of 2021. (Talk about qualified: She has an extensive background in science with degrees in mathematics, biochemistry and molecular biophysics, and a doctorate in biological engineering.) Despite the obvious differences between cycling and spaceflight, she believes the same sense of curiosity and wonder has motivated her in both disciplines. | |
