Happy new year. Making any resolutions? If you are, 2024 is shaping up to be a huge year. Resolve to help us cover it by supporting our independent, rigorous, open journalism.
It will be a landmark year for democracy, with watershed elections almost every month, culminating with the US presidential ballot in November. National votes could herald the end of an era in the UK, Indonesia and Mexico, and shore up authoritarians in Iran and Russia. Hundreds of millions are eligible to take part in the world's two biggest exercises in democracy, in India and the EU. The Guardian will be covering all of these ballots, and more besides. Democracies cannot flourish without factual, even-handed reporting.
Before then, we will have our hands full on the ground in Ukraine and the Middle East, with two unresolved conflicts that threaten wider spillover. Brave, impartial, compassionate journalism is vital in times of war. Without it, nefarious actors can literally get away with murder.
Away from geopolitics, our science and health teams will be covering new developments in everything from cancer treatments to Covid variants, space exploration and the rise of artificial intelligence. News isn't just bad stuff happening. There are tremendous bursts of inquiry, research, innovation and experimentation that promise much. We'll bring you all the eureka moments. | | | | | Meanwhile, our award-winning environmental team will keep you abreast of the biggest challenge of the age in a year likely to be the hottest on record. It's only by repeatedly reminding governments and businesses that our planet's precious equilibrium is in jeopardy that we can keep up the pressure for change, decarbonisation, sustainability and respect for vital ecosystems.
So these are our main preoccupations for 2024. There will be lighter fare, too – satire, cartoons, documentaries, lifestyle hacks, arts, culture, sport, music … I sometimes wonder how a few hundred journalists can accomplish all of this.
And then I am reminded: it's because they are supported by people like you.
