Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley is getting tougher on Donald Trump — just a little bit.
Haley, who served as the ex-president's ambassador to the United Nations, accused him of having a "temper tantrum" after he attacked her on immigration and started using her birth name, which reflects her South Asian heritage.
"I know Trump threw a temper tantrum about me last night. I heard that. I've seen the commercials you see. I will always tell you the truth," Haley said. "One of those things that my friend Trump said was that I didn't want to close the border. ... What I said is, I just don't want just a wall. We've got to do more than that."
"The second thing he is saying is I want to end Social Security. I've literally never said that. Literally never said that. He honestly thinks if he says something it just becomes true," she said.
Given that Trump was impeached twice, is facing 91 criminal charges and tried to overturn democracy to stay in power after losing the last election, you might think that Haley's rebukes are somewhat mild. The former South Carolina governor tends to group all of the above in a vague warning that "chaos" follows Trump around. And if she is trying to stay alive in the Republican nominating race, you'd think that she would be a bit tougher on her rival since Tuesday's New Hampshire primary may be her last real shot to take a stand. Also, while she takes umbrage at Trump's claims about her, she doesn't seem too worried about the Everest of falsehoods he piled up during four years in office and since.
Some pundits are wondering whether Haley is keeping it cool because she's eyeing a spot on Trump's ticket in the vice presidential spot.
But there's also this. Even those Republican voters who are open to considering someone other than Trump often say that they remember his presidency fondly — despite all that "chaos" Haley talks about.
If this primary race — and Trump's massive victory in Iowa on Monday night — taught us anything, it's that there are very few votes in the GOP for those who want to bring down Trump.
