Dear readers,  ‌ The Democratic National Convention in Chicago was staged against a backdrop of unbridled enthusiasm this week as Kamala Harris received the acclaim of party heavyweights including the Obamas and the Clintons. Following the withdrawal of Joe Biden from the presidential race, there is renewed optimism that the fresh approach of the vice president’s campaign – backed by a who’s who of America’s biggest stars of stage and screen in the Windy City – can derail Donald Trump’s bid for a second term in the White House in November.  ‌ Should Harris make history by becoming the first woman to be elected U.S. president, her husband, Douglas Emhoff, will carve out a chapter of his own. America’s second gentleman — the official title of Harris’ husband — may be about to become the first gentleman in the country's history.  As second gentleman, Emhoff is used to playing a supporting role. Indeed, he is the first man to hold this position: until Harris’ appointment, no woman had ever been vice president of the United States. “I’m her partner, I’m her best friend and I’m her husband. And that’s what I’m here for. I’m here to have her back,” he said.   ‌ EL PAÍS traveled to the front lines of the Ukrainian campaign on Russian soil, which was launched on August 6 with thousands of troops. After a year of fighting on the back foot, the surprise incursion, ordered by President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, has raised morale among Ukrainian units involved in the operation and, it is hoped in Kyiv, will relieve pressure on defenders on the Donetsk front, where Russian forces are advancing on the strategic defensive stronghold of Pokrovsk. “If Russia does not want to withdraw from our country and go back to the borders established for Ukraine in 1991, perhaps we will decide that we want to recover those of 1919,” said Mikhail, a sergeant in the 80th Airborne Brigade.   ‌ And finally, this week we spoke with Matt Groening, the creator of The Simpsons and Futurama. After the global success of his Springfield-set animation, Groening could have easily retired on what the series generates (some estimates put his net worth at around $600 million), but the banalities of human beings and what happens in the world still push him to continue working. “There’s no retirement! I love my job. It’s like child’s play. Telling stories, joking and making people laugh is basically the only thing I wanted to do when I grew up.
