The left and right seem to agree that America's immigration system is broken. How did it get that way? And what can be done to fix it? If you missed its premiere, today CNN will air Fareed's latest special report, "Immigration Breakdown." In it, Fareed examines the current crisis, which has featured record numbers of apprehensions at the southern US border in recent years. An asylum system established in the aftermath of World War II and the Holocaust, designed to offer safe haven to those facing persecution, may no longer fit America's immigration challenges. Many of those seeking refuge in the US today are fleeing economic deprivation, the ravages of extreme weather—and yes, in some cases violence—and Fareed argues the post-WWII mechanism of processing asylum claims is not equipped to handle this new influx. As importantly, Fareed examines how we got here, delving into America's relationship with immigration over the decades, from Irish arrivals in the 1800s to those seeking entry at the southern border today. As Fareed explains, US immigration policy has morphed, following political trends that have at times been driven by brazen nativism. If US political leaders can't design and implement a more organized system, Fareed argues, more nativism will be the bitter consequence. We wish all of our readers in the US and around the world a safe and happy New Year. | |
