Hunter Biden indicted on tax crimes | EL PAÍS USA EDITION | | | |
Dear readers, With the 2024 presidential election campaign on the horizon, Joe Biden was handed another blow – and the Republicans fresh ammunition – as the Democratic candidate’s son Hunter Biden was charged with three felonies and six misdemeanors relating to tax offenses. It is the second criminal case against Biden’s son, who was indicted on federal firearm charges in September. Hunter Biden has been subpoenaed to appear before the House as part of the preliminary investigation to see if there is enough evidence to impeach the president, who has dismissed Republican claims that he behaved illegally or unethically in connection with his son’s business dealings as “lies.”
A territorial dispute between Venezuela and Guyana erupted this week when the government of Nicolás Maduro announced it was planning to annex the territory of Essequibo, an oil and mineral-rich region that covers over two-thirds of Guyana and is controlled by Georgetown based on the 1899 Paris Arbitral Award. The decision from Caracas was based on a referendum staged by the Chavist authorities that observers have said may have been a case of Maduro testing the waters of his popular support ahead of presidential elections slated for 2024. The Venezuelan president has also used the dispute to stir up the specter of internal conspiracy and arrest warrants were issued for allies and colleagues of opposition candidate María Corina Machado over an alleged attempt to sabotage the vote.
As the war in Gaza enters its third month, EL PAÍS spoke to Palestinian child prisoners released in the exchange deal brokered between Israel and Hamas, and the family of two Bedouin hostages returned from the Strip, Aisha, 16, and Bilal, 18, whose cousin and uncle remain in the hands of the militias. “There was no party. We could not celebrate. We are all still praying for the return of Yousef and Hamza and for all those killed in the war, on both sides,” said Kamel Ziadna, a cousin of the released hostages.
