Rising tensions in Venezuela | EL PAÍS USA EDITION | | | |
Dear readers,
Tensions continue to rise in Venezuela, with the Maduro government arresting thousands of protesters. We spoke with opposition leader María Corina Machado about the contested election results, and with a group of Venezuelans in exile who have launched a hunger strike to protest the situation in the country.
Meanwhile in the United States, the race for the White House is getting tighter, with polls showing Kamala Harris neck-and-neck with Donald Trump, and even leading in some key swing states. Voters are eagerly waiting to see what will happen on September 10, when the two candidates face off in their first televised debate.
In other news, the scandal over the arrest of Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada and Joaquín Guzmán López deepened this week, after the former published a letter contradicting the official version of his capture. His uncorroborated statements have sparked controversy over the influence of organized crime in Mexico’s public affairs and have provided a first warning of the scope of a potential deal between El Mayo and U.S. authorities.
And finally, we spoke to paleoneurobiologist Emiliano Bruner about why the Neanderthals likely had cognitive abilities that humans either never had or lost.
